Loose style of Painting

Print out your PDF Template Drawing on watercolour paper or alternatively trace onto watercolour paper in light pencil for softer effect.

You may want to print a few copies for practise

Lightly trace the template onto watercolour paper using graphite paper.

Gently rub out your pencil lines so they are just visible.

This is a very loose style of painting …so have FUN, put some upbeat music on and even stand and dance to the music while you paint…. This will really help you to create a loose spontaneous style of painting.

Warm Up Exercise

Step 1

On some scrap watercolour paper do a few exercises to help warm yourself up and know your medium.

Test your watercolours by making a swatch so you know the colours you want to use.

so you know the colours you want to use.

Step 2

Have fun getting to know your colours by practising blending colours together to create new colours

Blending colours together.

Practise placing two colours side by side. Blend together with water.

Puddle Play.

Another way to create colours is to wet your paper & drop your colours into the water. By varying the amount of water in your ‘puddle’ and on your brush you can lighten the shade. Drop different colours into your ‘puddle’ & watch your colours move together.

Step 3

Load your brush up with a juicy amount of colour and use the water to vary the shade. While painted area is still wet drop a new colour into the area to create a new colour effect (Wet on wet technique).

Dropping colour into wet areas (wet on wet technique).

If in some areas you don’t want colour to bleed together wait for the area to dry before adding colour alongside.

To Paint the Flamingo

Step 1

Start by adding water for wet on wet technique.

Wet the area where you are wanting to add colour.

Step 2

Drop in colour and spread leaving some white areas.

Step 3

Finish the body of the bird. Vary the amount of water so some areas are darker and lighter.

Step 4

Tap your brush loaded with paint or use an old toothbrush to splatter droplets of colour to enhance the looser style and energy of your painting.

Step 5

Add in details using a black sharpie.

Step 6

Using your loaded brush or toothbrush, and using the same technique as step 4, add more splatter using a different colour.

Practise by doing a few more paintings. You will notice that after you have done a few series you will see an improvement.

Remember the Masters did many paintings on the same topic to become familiar with their techniques and topic and adjusted their painting until they were happy.

You may wish to have fun with the Pelican or the other downloadable templates to practice.

Remember you can use whatever colour combination you desire. This is purely a decorative and loose style of painting.

You may like to add stylised backgrounds to your flamingo or choosen artwork to create a story.
